I was disappointed. I went last year and liked the pork and the chicken, though, the pasta was heavy. This year the fish was a bit overcooked and bland. The chops were just ok. The veggies were the same on all the dishes. While they were fresh, they weren't inventive. The dishes needed more pizzazz. We all had to put salt and pepper on our entrees. The specials ($38 each) were a good $10 more than the dishes on the regular menu. My fault: I should have asked how much they were. The roll was good, but the olive oil had little taste. The plus is BYOB and the lovely service. Our waitress was helpful and professional. But those two reasons are not enough to make me want to go back.

This is the kind of place that you might glance at and just keep driving. But trust me: stop and experience the greatness that is Frankie & Johnnys. You won't be disappointed! Other family members of mine have been raving about F&J's for quite a while now, but I just got to experience it firsthand this past weekend. The first thing that struck me was the appearance of the building and dining room: totally casual, yet welcoming and tasteful. It doesn't flaunt the "gourmet-ness" that is the food. Which is great for the likes of me, since jeans or shorts are perfectly acceptable attire. I began with the vegan tomato lime soup. After the fist taste, I almost canceled my entree order so I could eat a few more servings of that soup. It's perfect - just the right blend of tomato, spices, lime and coconut milk. Delectable! I'm drooling right now just remembering it! The best part is, even the carnivores in our group loved it as much as I did. It's so creamy, you would never know it's vegan. My entree was the curried shrimp with vegetables and coconut rice. The rice was nice and light, just a touch of coconut, while the shrimp was perfectly cooked and doused in a lovely, creamy yellow curry sauce. If you are a curry fan, this was delish! Not spicy however, as the waitress warned it might be. I guess everyone has varying levels of spice-awareness, but for me this was nice and mild and the curry was the star, offset nicely by the sweet shrimp. The veggies were great too - just simply steamed to just the right done-ness. My sister's meal is also worth mentioning as I was hugely impressed by it! She had the Vegan Tostada. It essentially was a HUGE salad base with everything under the sun in it including avocados, fresh tomatoes and masses of grilled veggies. Then there were 3 crispy tostadas piled in a nice little column right in the center, layered with amazingness: black beans, sauteed rice and topped with super-fresh salsa and an herbed tofu cream that was out of this world. Absolutely delicious! I also tasted the Lobster Purses, which were quite rich, so only eating one is totally adequate, but the flavors were amazing. There's truffle in there and cream cheese (or the like) and huge chunks of lobster. My ONLY issue with the purses is that they were pretty greasy. There was a puddle of fry oil left on the plate and that was a turn-off for me. It would have been nice if they had been drained for a few minutes or something right after coming out of the fryer. Ditto that same complaint for my husband's Fried Mussles appetizer. Yummy, but the grease was overpowering for me. Overall, everyone else at the table was raving about their food and we all left very full and happy and with lots of leftovers (the portions are HUGE!). The fact that it's BYOB is great too - it saves the customers money which helps make the menu prices a little easier to take. But to be truly honest, the food is worth every penny!! Bravo!

I came here with my boyfriend on a weekend trip to Maine. It seems to be one of the only vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurants in the area, but don't let that turn you off- their menu is largely omnivorous, with lots of creative seafood and meat dishes. We ordered the curried tomato coconut soup and the house salad to start. The soup was divine- the tomatoes were definitely not from a can (apparently all the ingredients at F&J's are bought fresh year-round) the curry was spicy, and the broth was creamy but light. Their house salad is far from your dismal conventional iceburg and hothouse tomato creation- it featured fresh pineapple, grilled eggplant and carrots, and a delicious tangy lemon dijon dressing. For dinner, we ordered the Tostada from the specials menu. We asked to share it (we're typically light eaters on a budget), and to get cheese on the side, as I don't eat it. Instead of doing just that and bringing out an extra plate for us to split our meal, we were presented two gorgeous (full-sized) entrees. The dish had "Caribbean style" black beans in a thick, smoky sauce, garlicky tomato salsa, fresh field greens, handmade crunchy tortilla, grilled vegetables and tofu, and avocado. My boyfriend's plate had melted cheese on the tortillas, and mine had creamy tofu basil ricotta, which wasn't listed on the menu. Part of the great experience I had at F&J's can be attributed to the service. Our server was so helpful and friendly- she spoke to us like locals, and was constantly waiting on us. It was really empty in there, as it's off-season, but the enthusiasm obviously doesn't waver during the winter months. I asked to meet the chef, and he was the most down-to-earth, chill guy. He's been cooking for at least fifteen years, and had alot of info to share. BYOB doesn't hurt, either. Go to Frankie & Johnny's with a bottle of wine or a few beers and expect great service, a cozy atmosphere, and fresh, flavorful, creative food.

F&J's BYOB restaurant is great, lots of vegan options here. Its not much to look at - a modest, salmon-colored building with no real landscaping to speak of, but you don't really go to a restaurant totally for the view or the building right? The food here is amazing. It is extremely fresh, creative, visually stunning and the portions are ridiculously huge. I got the vegan sweet and sour pasta, with lots of fresh chopped ginger, vegetables, a nice spicy-sweet sauce and tofu sauteed like its supposed to be. The food was so good we went there again on the second night of our vacation. (That, and the fact that Ogunquit has no other vegan options that we could find.) This time, I got a grilled portobella mushroom that took up most of the room on the huge dinner plate, with garlic, tons of fresh basil, tomatoes and artichoke hearts. The service is great, the inside is tiny but cozy. Their warm pea and mint soup as an appetizer is amazing.

What more can I say than to give it 5 stars! The food is fantastic and the presentation is art. The most beautiful plating I have ever seen. We had the calamari special and it was melt in your mouth tender. The garnish on the plate looked like jeweled confetti. The side house salad is a meal in itself. The homemade pasta is incredible. Don't be deterred by the price - you get what you pay for - the highest quality food, and BYOB helps offset the grand total.

Any summer that goes by without a visit to Frankie & Johnny's seems incomplete. Many years ago we chanced upon this place and, in spite of it's kind of funky look, decided to give it a try; sad to think we wouldn't know what we were missing if we hadn't tried it. It turns out that the interior is immaculate (but hardly fancy) and the food ( by Johnny ) is creative, super fresh (from their garden & local sources) and consistent. The menu is not extensive but there is pretty much something for everybody (meat, seafood and a Veggie's delight). I had homemade pasta w/ lobster ,mussels & shrimp and my wife had one of their entree salads which has about 15-20 different ingredients w/ a blueberry/tarragon dressing. Thea, Johnny's wife, runs the front of the house with grace and good humor. This is a BYOB establishment (there is a small grocery one mile south off the restaurant on Rt. 1 that sells beer & wine). Payment note: they take cash or check only.

Just one more review for me of another of our favorites. Frankie and Johnnys is easily my wife and I's favorite restaurant and favorite place to bring a couple or a couple of couples to get an amazing meal and to break open a bottle of wine. The food is fantastic and expect to spend approximately $120 for 4 people including tip and bring your own bottle, where as you would have spent $200 easy for the same meal at another restaurant. The food is absolutely terrific and they seem to take care of any and all allergies. Again a restaurant that has food that is made from the basics and tastes amazing.. I have theory that if the menu is more than a couple of pages long, it is probably pre made food coming out of a box...or wax paper... make sure to make the jaunt up to York/Ogunquit to eat at this jem... also don't be surprised that if your with another couple the drive is actually enjoyable both ways because the evening is extended a bit...

second visit to Frankie and Johnnys. .........as good as the first time. lobster purses were shared, fantastic! main couses, bouliabas was delicious in a fennel based broth. chicken camelia was as good as the last time we had it. lobster stuffed haddock or haddock wrapped lobster was delicious with a be r blanc sauce, so good iasked for more. and finally, salmon with a dill sauce that was perfect. everything was prepared to our liking, portions are more than some might handle. Their dessert menu was tempting, but we were past full. pricey, but not bad for what you get. remember to bring your beverage of choice as they do not serve alcoholic beverages . this place is on our new regular pick when we come back next year.

Hubby and I started eating here on our first wedding anniversary in 2006. We used to come once a year for our anniversary, but it's seems in the last few we haven't made it. We did however make it there tonight while on vacation about a half hour away. Let me just say, we've never had a bad meal here. Everything is seasonal and fresh they have plenty of options if you do or don't eat seafood, the staff is always helpful, caring and attentive. I will always recommend Frankie & Johnny's to anyone!

Probably the best dinner I've had in the Ogunquit area. Great vegetarian choices as well as specials. I ordered the swordfish special and it was grilled to perfection, my partner had the shrimp scampi and it was beyond flavorful. Great appetizers (the salads were fresh containing an eclectic mix of ingredients). This is a cash/check only, BYOB restaurant -and clearly, they pass the savings along to you. You might think "How tacky!" to bring a bottle of wine, but we loved the idea that we could see the menu online and pair a great bottle of wine of our own choosing, for a quarter of the price most restaurants charge you for it. Don't let the exterior fool you - this is a top notch dining experience. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because I found it a bit noisy - as the night went on, it got louder and louder, but not rowdy.

I went back three days later, that's how much I liked it. This time I had the pumpkin ravioli with gorgonzola sauce. It was wonderful.

This place is beyond amazing! My husband and I went there last night for the second time, and it seemed to be even better than we remembered. It is a great place if you are looking for amazing food and nice atmosphere. Be prepared as it is pricey, but worth every penny! The lobster purses are so delicious! I also got the pumpkin raviolis and they were amazing! Best part is its byob, so you can save $ there and bring your own beer or wine. Can't wait to go back!

This restaurant really is as good as it gets. We have been coming here for a very long time and have never been disappointed. The staff is top notch, they recently expanded so there is a nice dining room in back. Tables outside to wait in the garden area - watch the goats, etc. The service is excellent - it's byob and they are right there to open your wine. If you are going to the theater they make sure to get your order in quick. the food is simply delicious - fresh and plentiful. I've had their steak, pork, haddock with lobster tail, vegetarian soup, fish chowder, lobster purses, unbelievable salads. It is worth every cent. Your meal comes with soup and/or salad. I always have enough for lunch the next day. Really worth the trip.

The food here is phenomenal ! We started with a few appetizers: fried goat cheese and the vegetable spring rolls. Right away we knew this place doesn't fool around ! Everything was fresh and home made .. and delicious ! I had the pan seared scallops which I believe was a special. I hope they have them again when I go .. my wife got the lamb chops and couldn't believe how many they gave her ! It's BYOB which is fine with us, we're not big drinkers when we eat but we did bring a bottle of wine. The waitstaff were awesome too. They were all very friendly ! If you are in the area and want a great place to eat - make a reservation! You'll be happy you did.

FABULOUS! AMAZING! SCRUMPTIOUS! BEST FOOD WE HAVE EVER HAD! Not always easy finding a GREAT vegetarian meal, but FRANKIE & JOHNNYS know how to make some good food! Adorable, cozy, intimate atmosphere and very accommodating! There is something for everyone there, from duck, steak, rack of lamb to quite a few vegetarian & vegan options. We had Pumpkin raviolis with gorgonzola sauce candies walnuts and asparagus and my wife ordered stacked eggplant tower with pumpkin quinoa, tofu wedges, a top broccoli and tomatoes. We were so happy with our meal and the service was amazing! Waitstaff was very attentive and friendly. Made us feel like family =) We can't wait to go back there and tell all our friends about this place!

Have been frequenting this restaurant for almost twenty years. For the most part the food has been exceptionally delicious and interesting. We have noticed that the quality this summer has diminished somewhat perhaps because they are so busy now. Also, the menu could use a little more variety. It's somewhat staid for those of us who come in frequently.

Two things: BYOB and CASH ONLY. These are very important when choosing F&Js. The BYOB helps keep the costs down, but be wary of the cash only. I wouldn't want to get caught there without cash and only plastic... I wonder how they handle that. Assuming you have your drinks and some cash, this place is awesome. Great food, excellent service. The staff are wonderful. Sometimes its hard to get a reservation, but always a great time.

If I could give Frankie and Johnnies 10 stars, I would. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here last October with approximately 30 people. To this day, my friends and family are still talking about the food and the wedding rehearsal night in general. Thea, one of the owners was an absolute gem to work with. My one year anniversary is quickly approaching and I am counting down the days until I can visit for another amazing dinner and house salad (omg-yum.) Thank you, Frankie and Johnnies!

We drove from PA, on our way to Mt Desert Island, and stopped here because of all the rave reviews. Those reviewers must live in a cave and eat tree bark because our food was dull and tasteless. The 'grilled veggies' were hard, cold, and showed no signs of caramelization. The seafood chowder should have been called potato soup. The carrot ginger soup had some flavor but would have been more palatable had it been hot. The salad was BIG, so many reviewers seemed to be impressed by that size, but it was boring and tasteless. The thick sweet blueberry dill dressing would have been better used as a spread on toast. And for this we paid an exorbitant sum.

Upon arrival we were a bit skeptical due to the quaint appearance of the place, but pleasantly surprised by the comfortable atmosphere and the fine quality of the food served! The owner and waitresses were very friendly. Although the entrees were pricey, the portions were very large, and the food was worth the price! The fact that the restaurant is BYOB is very convenient and eliminated the addition of a bar bill to the check. Overall a great place!

Frankie & Johnny's is simply brilliant, a restaurant dedicated to natural ingredients, gourmet preparation, in a small, intimate setting. And it's BYOB. As such, it's become the traditional dinner destination at the end of a local winery, orchard and farm tour. It's a small place, maybe 8 tables, so I'd highly recommend reservations. Maybe it's the intimacy of the setting (feels like the dining room in someone's home), maybe it's the staff, maybe it's the BYOB, but the restaurant has the vibe of an underground restaurant. You'll start out eating alone at your table, but by the end of the evening you'll be talking and laughing with everyone in the restaurant. Portions are enormous, almost to a flaw. I saw a salad come out that was a good six inches tall. You're almost guaranteed not to be able to finish your plate, which will drive you crazy, because the food is so good you won't want to stop eating. The menu changes regularly so it's hard to recommend a dish, but if the lobster purses happen to be available, they're absolutely divine. Don't hesitate to order a steak either, because these people know what "rare" means and aren't afraid to serve accordingly. Two appetizers, two soups, two entrees, coffee and desert all came to less than $100, and we were able to enjoy two excellent bottles of wine we had brought from local vineyards at no extra cost. Keep in mind, Frankie & Johnny's doesn't accept plastic, so be sure to bring cash.

I cannot say enough how fantastic our Frankie and Johnny's experience was. And it was an experience - far surpassing the standard dinner. From the eclectic decor to the great staff and the food...oh the food. A beautiful melding of flavors and textures and portions enough for three meals! We had the Pork Delmonico (magnifique!) the seafood scampi, haddock stuffed with lobster and one of us (who shall remain anonymous) who couldn't decide and ordered two dinners! We had fun, pure and simple. Shout out to Gary who provided out of this world service and to the owner who also tended to our "flock" with grace and flair (sorry, we can't remember your name!!). Can't wait to come back.

Outstanding food. We had the crabcakes (best ever). The lobster purses are amazing. Genrous and tasty dinner salads. We split the blackened pork and still went home with leftovers. The balance of sweet and savory in the pork dish was perfect. They were shorthanded in the kitchen and very apologetic about how slow things were but we would definitely go back.

I guess I just don't get it. It was okay. Certainly nothing special. The salad was okay. It wasn't flavorless like some people commented, but it wasn't terribly memorable either. I had the NY Strip for about $38.00. It was a good size cut. About reasonably priced, maybe a few dollars higher than what you would expect but not outrageous. It was accompanied by barely grilled bland vegetables and mashed potatoes that were exactly the way I cook them at home. My wife had the vegan meal which she liked better the next day. To me, it looked like a mishmash of a week's worth of polenta, with quinoa over a not very flavorful eggplant ratatouille and a mushroom just soaked in balsamic vinegar. Okay, so you can get a vegan dish. Why all the five stars? Nice, competent, friendly server.

I never thought I'd say these words, but the only 'negative' I have about this restaurant is that the portions are too big. But everything is delicious, even heated up in the microwave a day or two later, so it's not really a negative. The food here is perfectly cooked with respect to the ingredients. It's a claim that many local/seasonal restaurants claim to make, but this is one of the few places that I think truly live up to the potential of simple cooking with excellent results. My thai chowder was kind of a let down, but the spring rolls were super fish, and the salmon with pineapple rice was delish - I'm still thinking about how that rice got to be so good! My husband's pork chops were perfectly cooked, and he lamented that he had filled up on the gigantic salad that came with the meal and could only eat a quarter of it. It's hard to dine here and save room for dessert, but we grabbed a blueberry bread pudding to go and although I didn't get to try it I hear it was tasty. The prices might seem high here on first glance, but with the quantity and quality of what you get it's actually quite a bargain.

The best food I have ever had! It had great service and atmosphere! Everything was organic and natural. Oh yeah and if you care it is BYOB. They supply the glasses, etc.. and you bring beer, wine, etc. I suggest splitting a meal because portions are beyond huge. Everyone we met in ME said how wonderful this restaurant was and they were without a doubt right! I will spread the good word back home..

Frankie & Johnny's is a lovely, local, family-run, heartwarming surprise. This earnest BYOB restaurant would win anybody over, especially if it's summer and you are lucky enough to have one of the owners' sweet and delightful daughters be your server. I had a strip steak special with gazpacho to start, and the steak was perfectly cooked-- rare, to my specifications-- with a deeply flavorful and savory sauce. As others have mentioned here, the main drawback of the restaurant is that the portions are simply too large, making an otherwise appetizing meal seem more overwhelming than it is attractive. This goes hand in hand with prices that are surprisingly high for the area and the casual ambiance of the restaurant, but you can't really begrudge them this when it is clear that the owners are pouring their hearts and souls into the place and its food. The mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables that came alongside my dish were less inspired, but the seared scallops that my friend enjoyed were also expertly prepared. The most important advice I can impart to you would be to NOT skip dessert in spite of the intimidating dinner portion sizes: the innovative house-made ice creams that we tasted (vegan coconut-chocolate, savory fig, and fresh strawberry) were some of the best we'd ever had. As with the dinner menu, the extensiveness and diversity of the dessert menu makes you doubtful that the execution will match the ambition of the establishment, but here again you will be pleasantly surprised. We were overall so charmed by the Frankie & Johnny's experience that one of my friends jokingly asked our waitress if she could move in-- she was told that there was a one-room efficiency in the building and that they were always looking for help with all the livestock on the property. The offer was met with serious consideration.

Was just in Ogunquit for my first time this past weekend and was looking for somewhere good to eat. Friend suggested it based upon good word of mouth, so gave it a try. Called up the restaurant to find out their hours and upon talking to them, they said they preferred reservations if possible, so made a reservation. After making a reservation, they stated that they do not accept credit cards, only cash and checks. Also mentioned that their restaurant is a BYOB, so if we'd like wine with dinner, we'd need to bring our own bottle. The restaurant is attached to a house and is small and quaint. Inside is rustic with a nice fireplace and overall is very cozy. As we sat down, the waitress immediately offered to open our bottle of wine and grabbed us a couple glasses. The menu had a great mix and one of the night's specials was kangaroo! I have never seen a restaurant that served that, but didn't want to try it either :) Started with the calamari appetizer which came with a red curry dipping sauce as well as a side of I believe a mango salsa. It was cooked perfectly! For dinner I had one of the specials, pumpkin ravioli and my friend had the pork. Each dinner came with your choice of soup or salad. I opted for the ceaser salad. Dressing did not seem to be mayo based, so was lighter and refreshing. The pumpkin ravioli came beautifully plated. They had asparagus pointing outwards from the center of the plate with the raviolis on top. In the center of the dish was a small amount of butternut squash and the sauce was topped with plenty of sliced almonds to give it a nice crunch. My friend's pork dish was huge. I can't imagine anybody would be able to finish the dish at one meal. Friend said it was good but could no way eat the entire thing and ended up wrapping up at least half of the dish. The dinner came to only about $66 which was an awesome value. Calamarai appetizer, 2 salads, and 2 dinners, very reasonable! There was also no corking fee which I appreciated. Waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. Best of all, the restaurant prides itself on being all natural, I appreciate that! Next time I am in the area, I'll be sure to return!

I have been here many times and every time it is perfect! The food is amazing - the service fantastic. I ordered the "Lobster Purses"; HUGE chucks of lobster and mascarpone stuffed inside some sort of filo dough; fried so lightly and truffle oil on it - WOW. The tuna dish was also WOW. BOYB.

As a local business owner and regular patron of this fabulous restaurant, I want to say that I have had outstand meals consistantly and have recommended this to all my clients that have moved into the area. There is always a good selection of meals and to die for deserts. We make each visit an event and typicall stay 3 hours enjoying our friends, Tia and staff. I love the BYOB aspect which makes it more affordable. Great personalized service and value. We always look forward to our next event there.

Excellent service and HUGE portions. The food was good. I'm on the border about how I feel about no liquor license. They do a good job of letting you know ahead of time when you make your reservation, so we knew to stop at a liquor store on the way. But what happens if you just walk in? How do you know then? Anyway, we were there celebrating a special occaision and were very happy! Wonderful place to go on vacation! And I think the dinosaurs are very cute.

It looks like I am going to be the lone wolf on my experience at this restaurant. My husband and I were staying in York and I read all of the wonderful reviews on Yelp and suggested we give this place a try. I really WANTED to like this funky organic restaurant with sheep on the property, I truly did. But the first tipoff that we might be in trouble was in walking in and seeing two large plates of very unappetizing and goopy looking pasta being served. But we did not allow this to detract us, and my husband and I both ordered the dinner salad with grilled fish (he ordered halibut, I got the salmon). We were astonished when our plates arrived, as it was in essence a massive mound of lettuce with a number of disparate ingredients. I will concede that the lettuce was exceptionally fresh, as were the other ingredients which included nuts, fruit, grilled veggies and fresh mozzarella balls. (a neighboring table chimed in to comment on the massive size of the salads). I am sorry to have to report that the salad was absolutely tasteless. A strawberry dressing had zero flavor, nor did any of the other ingredients on the plate. It was probably the most bland salad I have ever had. At $24 a salad, my husband deemed it to be the most expensive head of lettuce he had ever consumed. We wish we had gone back to the funky Jamaican roadside stand down the street, where we got an exquisite plate of ribs, rice and pickled vegetables the previous day for a heck of a lot less money.

Oh, my God, the food Bring your own wine and wine and hunger; There is no wrong, here! To expound: This is hands down the most welcoming and charming place I have ever had the pleasure of dining in with the possible exception of my own home. Endearingly, you're to bring your own beer or wine and if you're so inclined, share a sip with your waitress (in our case, also the owner, as I understand it). Camilla, one of the kids, brought us a wee dessert she had apparently done herself and was quite thrilled to take a minute to talk to us about her exploits and my goats. Even the regulars at the table with us had a rough time picking from among the astonishingly excellent choices. I wish I could afford to eat here every Friday! Happy birthday, Marlene. Thanks for hauling us along!
